Self Published Comics Review: Zombie Outlaw #1
October 7, 2011

Irvine State University student, Matt Naismith, has one thing on his mind. Obviously, it ain’t worrying about his studies, it’s trying to the get the attention of the girl of his dreams, K.T. Delaney. Feeling totally lost in even how to properly talk to this girl, Matt asks his buddy Will for some advice. Will says he will totally help his buddy out…after he’s done discovering the whereabouts to the hat of the local legend,  the Zombie Outlaw.

This sets ups the first issue to the comic ZOMBIE OUTLAW. Written by Brian J. Apodaca and illustrated by Benny Jordan, the comic is a light, easy read. The characters are nothing more then archetypes right now (the geek, the cool guy and the hot girl) but it’s the first issue, so I hope to see if they will expand on their personalities in future issues.  While the story’s set up is a bit to simplistic, (no real build up from one scene to another) I will say that when the zombie stuff happens the momentum really kicked up and I’m legitimately interested in seeing where they’re going with this book. I can honestly say I have no idea what’s going to happen in issue 2.

I do have some issues with the art.  I feel the character designs are too similar to each other, and I wish there was more background work. The coloring is also a bit too flat for my taste.  BUT, that being said, I know this  stuff that will be improved by issue 2. I was sent the cover to issue 2 and already I see a vast improvement in the art.

While I have my issues with this issue, I can see where things can get better as the series comes out. There’s plenty of potential for this comic to really go into some fun and cool stories.   And, hey, I’m interested in reading the next issue, and for any new comic series, that’s more then some are willing to say after reading an issue #1.
