What they say: Eros and Thanatos … When the young film graduate Marko is full of ideals and drive sets about to revolutionize the Serbian cinema, he must soon find that nobody was waiting for him. After a couple of promotional clips that fail due to his unusual ideas, it is time for him soon: Porn terminus. But he did not give up so easily. Driven by the great vision he bicht with a colorful troupe of porn performers, junkies and failed to actors to tidy with a live cabaret porn shake up the rural Serbia. Sex and Drugs and Rock’n'Roll! But the reality triumphs over ideals. Without money and after a few unpleasant encounters with, honest citizens’ they stand before the abyss. Suddenly a man appears, babbling something about, Snuff ‘and Marko makes an outrageous offer … And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you …

What I say: Serbia must truly be a hellhole. Everything I have seen to come out of there has been vile, evil, and horrendous. The Life and Death of the Pornobande is no exception. Coming a year before A Serbian Film, this film truly threw open the gates and brought us a vision of Serbia today.

While A Serbian Film is all about shocking you into numbness, The Life and Death of the Pornobande goes for a slightly less horrible but just as disturbing look at life in Serbia. The group travels around doing sex shows for small towns, but make no money and are constantly harassed and worse. The opportunity to do snuff films presents its self and things spiral downward from there.

The film takes a good hard look at what people will do when things are difficult and the lengths they go to in order to achieve their dreams. There are no dreams achieved here. This films contains scenes of graphic sex and violence. And I don’t know which area is more disturbing.

Also included in this package are a DVD copy of the film (PAL format), and a DVD of the directors documentary Made in Serbia. This film is about the Serbian porn industry and it’s probably more tragic and disturbing than the main feature as this is a documentary and these people are real and these events true.

Picture quality varies between excellent and very rough, depending on what is going on and how it was filmed. This is the fault of how it was shot and not a knock on Bildstoerung. The package also inclused a booklet about the film but alas I could not read it. The pack is very import friendly as the discs are region free and English subs are included!

This is a compelling yet disturbing pack that is highly recommended to fans of world cinema that like the dark side.
