It was a pleasure getting back up and running ECAH has had alot of scheduling conflicts but ladies and gents we are back and more exciting than ever…..we had fun with our guest Mr Rick Olney and look forward to our next episode………BTW let us know your feedback !!!!

  • Matthew Hawes

Having Rick Olney on? Really? The guy who is hated by everyone in the comic book industry and owes thousands and thousands of dollars? Great guest! Maybe next you can have Rob Granito on or Josh Hoopes?

    http://iblogalot.com/category/rick-olney/

  • Joe Zhang

Rick Olney owes over $35,000 to creators he commissioned work from according to Bleeding Cool and other credible sources.

Rick Olney is bully and a liar. Creators beware of his lies and his scams.

    Shame on you Rick Olney.

  • Howard

First post! Rick is a real stand up guy. Too bad Scott and Fabian didn’t aim their streams at him.

  • http://n/a Dante AKA Talyle

I just want to clear the air concerning comments made (Matthew) we at AHEC are entitled to interview anyone we wish, regardless of facts public opinion or reputation it would be immature to not discuss the wonderful world of comic and media if we didnt welcome all types of views and opinions, that being said I respect the view that you have, weather agreed or not because its your view…HOWEVER lets respect the fact that all aspects of media are discussed here , we dont cherry pick, we keep it real and talk to all sorts of people popular or not….but thanks for coming by we welcome you to the page and encourage your honest personal view points….

  • Sara

Telling the truth about Rick Olney isn’t a view or an opinion. Fact: he has cheated many, many people. Fact: he has been threatening lawsuits (not to mention physical violence) for years. Fact: he has made many homophobic, racist, and misogynistic posts which are still available for inspection. Fact: he hasn’t held an event of any kind since 2003 (he announces, then cancels them), and ORCA hasn’t been active for years. You gave this guy a platform and made him sound legitimate, which is what he desperately wants. The last person who took a “well, he hasn’t cheated me so far” attitude was Matt Busch, and look what happened to him.

  • Artful Angie

Did you idiots even look into who you’re giving time to on your “show”??

  • http://www.inter-fan.org DOC

Dang, really? Rick? I would confirmation on this collaboration of his with Mort Todd And Joe Rubinstein. It’s nice to have folks with different opinions on your show but having someone who has cheated and stolen form so many people as RO has done, does not do Comic Fandom justice.. Oh and Dante, it’s whether not weather..check your spelling.

    • Rick Olney

      DOC,
I don’t throw names around to impress anyone. I stated on the podcast what I said and that is just what I said. Regarding Mort and Joe, I have worked with them and hope to collaborate further, along with a number of other known and lesser know (but equally AWESOME) creative types. Again, catch the next podcast.

Oh, and DOC, its from not form. Check yourself better.

      • http://www.inter-fan.org DOC

Oh you got me RO, my mistake. I just hope Mort and Joe know what they are getting themselves into with hooking up with you. Of course you throw around names, you try and make the unaware think you are some kind of important figure-head in Fandom, when all you truly are is an embarrassment and a blight to Fandom.

        • http://www.inter-fan.org DOC

Opps again, I meant a blight ON Fandom.

  • Doc Arkham

“we dont cherry pick, we keep it real and talk to all sorts of people popular or not….”

Excellent. I look forward to your show featuring the victims of Rick Olney. I recommend starting with Matt Busch and representatives of the Disabled American Veterans. And perhaps you can get someone from Lucasfilm to comment. That’s be a coup for your show, and it would certainly be keeping it real.

    http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/10/03/rick-olney-sells-indiana-jones-world-wap-without-matt-busch-or-lucasfilms-permission/

  • Shane

HAHAHAHA! I hope this has a follow up interview. I hope you guys know what you are doing. HA!

  • Matthew Hawes

I have a few questions for Jeff Hartz.

I clicked your name here to see what else you have posted. You posted this: http://www.aboutheroes.com/?p=11581

You attended The Ithaca Cabin Fever Comic Book convention and interviewed Roger Stern. Did you know Rick Olney was too cowardly to attend that convention because people he threatened with physical violence and used homophobic remarks against were in attendance? Did you know Roger Stern has nothing but bad things to say about Rick Olney?

    Now in reply to Dante.

You say that you, “keep it real”. Rick Olney claimed 1800 members of ORCA, this is a falsehood. The talk about Rick and Comics In The Classroom? A known lie. Gets comics in the store because he doesn’t have time to go to Ravenswood? Another lie, he’s not allowed to shop there. No realness on this podcast.

I’m glad you encourage my personal viewpoints. They are based on knowing the facts and not saying awesome and sweet every time Rick says another lie without asking for any kind of proof.

So I’m left now to wonder, did you know all this about Rick before the podcast? If you did and gave him a platform it shows a lack of character. If you didn’t research him ahead of time, now you are aware and if he is interviewed again, well I think that will speak to what kind of website this is.

  • Cory

Surely everyone knows about this scum. So when are the real questions coming?

  • http://ithacan-alwaysintrepid.blogspot.com/ Alec Frazier

Jeff Hartz, I assume you’ll be reading this. You are, to put it kindly, an ASSHAT. I met you briefly at Ithacon, and I didn’t care for you much then. This, however, takes the cake.

  • http://nilskidoo.blogspot.com/ Richard Caldwell

This is how you self-destruct a podcast.

Next time (presuming you have the cajones to keep at it) research, research, research, gentlemen.

  • Cherry Picker

If you don’t cherry pick, then why didn’t you ask him about the money he owes people, the lies he’s told, and why so many respected names speak against him?

  • David Rice

I love the original About Heroes podcast. Been listening to it since the Peter Cullen interview. I don’t believe Omar or Dan would approve this guy being interviewed. I don’t think the guy is the devil. Its just he is notorious for lying.

  • http://holycomics.com Jason A. Quest

Of course: You’re entitled to interview whomever you want. You can interview Hosni Mubarek, Bernie Madoff, David Duke, and Erik Prince if you want.* But if you do, and all you do is toss them softballs and give them a platform that makes them seem like legitimate political or business figures, then you have to expect some flak for it. You’ve just assisted a known fraud with his latest scam. So all I can assume from this snotty and hostile reaction to people pointing this out, is that either a) you’re in on it, or b) you’re too infantile to admit you made a mistake, retract the interview, and apologize.

*If any of these names aren’t familiar to you, try googling them… you apparently need the practice.

  • Rick Olney

Hmmm… interesting. Looking forward to the next episode where perhaps I’ll be able to talk about a few of these misconceptions and lies that seem to have gained a foothold about me. More importantly though that its pointed out that education and comic books don’t always go hand-in-hand. Sometimes people with an opinion, negative or positive, use the Internet to express themselves. I’ve never lied or misrepresented myself. Never.

    • http://nilskidoo.blogspot.com/ Richard Caldwell

Notorious for lying is understating the issue here entirely. I defy ANYONE to find just ONE person (other than Mrs. Olney) who will back ANY of your claims. You stay on the move because you are likely facing criminal convictions in multiple states. The industry has enough of an identity complex and assorted inferiority issues without crooks like you helping to bring about the end that much quicker.

All the evidence in the world exists to contradict everything you say. You have no evidence in any way, shape or form to support ANY claim or excuse you have ever made, no logical or ethical defense for any promise you have ever broken.
It’s not that you suffer from bad PR. You generate bad PR for the entire medium. You are no less the victim of gross misunderstanding than was Charles Ponzi.

      • Rick Olney

I stay on the move? Mr. Caldwell, if that is your actual name, I live at an address where I have lived since 2007. Prior to that, I was right down the street leasing a home that really couldn’t wait to vacate for several reasons. My family name is known still by friends and family in Yorkville, where I grew up. Beyond that, I have lived in property in Whitesboro; in Utica for a short time and on my family’s estate up north in the Adirondack foothills.

Your blathering about ‘proof’ would, dare I say it, never reach your brain…if I did (and I have) provided it. But hang in there. There may be hope for you to grow up one day.

        • http://nilskidoo.blogspot.com/ Richard Caldwell

So how many completed projects or events have you had, ever?

And I have a Masters in Philosophy. You have a laundry list of debt. Putting down others is not providing credible, or any, explanatory defense for your crimes.

          • Rick Olney

Excellent question, Richard! Why don’t we save that one for the next podcast? I shall happily divulge my many completed projects (with proof on camera) dating back to possibly the mid 1980s.

Listen, don’t take this as an insult, because it isn’t meant to be… but the fact that you may have a Masters in Philosophy doesn’t really mean ‘squat’ to me. In fact, it also doesn’t mean that you are sensible or have common sense. But I am happy for you regardless. How’s that?

You mention “crimes” and for the life of me you follow that by asserting that I owe you an explanation. I owe you nothing, sir. I don’t even know you. I dare say that you one of the many that believe everything you read on the Internet.

And, being ‘witty’ with words here is fine, as long as you don’t come off as a Rick Olney ‘stalker’ or otherwise stunted Master of thinking you’re necessarily smarter than anyone or everyone else posting here. Have a nice evening!

  • Matthew Hawes

    Rick Olney, “I’ve never lied”

Our goal is to sell 100 maps before our 2012 Adirondack ComicFest! The remainder of unsold maps shall be available there. ALL PROCEEDS from the sales of these maps are being donated to a Veteran’s charity to be announced under full disclosure on April 15th.

    http://sequentialsoul.blogspot.com/2012/02/indiana-jones-world-map.html

*Looks at calender* Maybe you are using very, very tiny print only you can see but just where did you disclose anything yesterday Rick? So that’s a lie right there. Also seems like charity fraud to sell something for a charity and not pay them.

How’s that goal to selling 100 maps coming along? You previously said you had nothing to do with the Adirondack ComicFest 2012 and it was being put on by others in Lake Placid. Funny, I’ve never read a single word promoting it anyplace but your blog and even there, not since February. So there’s another lie.

Maybe next time ORCA member Jeff Hartz comes over you can show him the 200 or so Indiana Jones maps you have in your possession. Minus of course the 10 you’ve claimed to have already sold. While he is there maybe he can take a photo of the dozens of statues you recently claimed to buy? Or I know, you have that letter from George Lucas saying he made Ric Olie in The Phantom Menace to thank you. I bet Jeff would love to see that letter. Wouldn’t you Jeff? Come on Rick, show him. Unless… was that a lie too?

    • Rick Olney

I’m not into pissing contests any more. Tune in to the next podcast, Matt Hawes. All the answers you seek will be divulged. But again, be sure to sweep your mind of the hangman’s platform you’ve imaginatively built. Better still, send Jeff your questions. I’ll happily answer them to the best of my ability during the next podcast.

      • Matthew Hawes

Rick Olney says, “I’m not into pissing contests any more.”

So why did you immediately reading my comment then proceed to your blog and make a post about the Ric Olie figure?

        http://sequentialsoul.blogspot.com/2012/04/star-wars-geekiness.html

I love how to defend yourself you say that unless George Lucas to dismisses your story it happened. By that logic, your hero Glenn Beck sent me a letter saying he knows for a fact you owe over 35 thousand dollars and you are illegally in possession of Matt Busch’s maps. Do you deny it? Sorry, you can’t. Unless Glenn comes here and dismisses my story I’m sticking to it!!

Also, when linking to a page about Ric Olie, you may want to not use a page that calls it a “Hated pegwarmer” You do know that means it sold very poorly and no one like it right?

I don’t expect an answer, after all you don’t get into pissing contests anymore right? Unless… was that another lie, something you NEVER do.

        • Rick Olney

Actually, Matt… my blog was already written several days ago. I simply needed to post it. And I did before coming here and reading all this childish and inane posts.

The fact that the action figure is identified as a “Hated pegwarmer”doesn’t mean a thing to me. It fits. I’m drawn to the character, as you are, for very obvious reasons. And again, for the record — I don’t owe anyone or any number of persons upwards to the dollar figure of 35k. If I did, they certainly would’ve resolved this matter between themselves and me long before now. I mean, we’re talking 2005-2006…that Tales of the Spooky fell in upon itself. But maybe we can discuss that at the next podcast. Email Jeff your specific questions, if you’d like.

  • http://www.unscrewedcomic.com/letter/index.php Charles

You know how you can tell someone is lying? He says “I’ve never lied”.

Dudes, you do not want to associate yourselves with this guy. Just take a look at http://www.unscrewedcomic.com/letter/index.php and ask yourselves how much you like being subpoenaed before you start promoting him and his scams.

    • Rick Olney

      Dear Charles,

Is that a spark of intimidation I read in your reply? Why and under what legal grounds would the UNSCREWED group have subpoena rights?

And this is the type of tactic immature people, such as yourself, uses to try and insert yourself into matters that do not concern you. All you’ve pointed to is a group that has libeled me; where no rightful legal action has been taken to correct their own immature stance. I doubt that you even listened to the podcast.

      • http://www.scribblerworks.us/blog/ Sarah Beach

Gee, Rick, you really sling that “libel” term around an awful lot, but you never follow up on it. Because you cannot prove that those who are speaking against you are actually lying in what they are saying. You do in fact owe several people considerable amounts of money. There are in fact court judgements against you specifying a requirement that you pay the judgement.

To date, the only known payment you have made is $100 to a collection agency against the amount of over $2,000 plus the interest accruing on it. Where is the libel in these statements? The documents of the judgement are easy enough to find on the net. How is repeating the statement libel?

It’s a pity that the podcast hosts have given you a forum, because though you spew a lot of promotional talk, you have yet to present to the audience much of anything that is satisfactory entertainment. You’re not really worth the time they spent on you.

        • Rick Olney

          Sarah Beach:

You remind me of the common Street vendor peddling stale old popcorn.

I’ve explained to you (and others) several times that my business is none of your business. Likewise, you have nothing pertinent or factual to share here beyond the troll fodder you’ve always rolled around in. I’ll bet that you don’t even actively read comic books, in fact. You’re just here to sell your crappy popcorn. Enjoy!

  • http://nilskidoo.blogspot.com/ Richard Caldwell

So About Heroes Powers That Be, is the spike in traffic worth the bad publicity and the diminished respect?

Would a boycott really help or hurt at this point?

  • Matthew Hawes

Rick? Rick is this you? It can’t be. Rick Olney said he was done with pissing contests and yet you reply again? Who are you sir? Do not sully the name Rick Olney. Someone done with pissing contests will not reply to me again. They will keep their word and show they NEVER LIE.

As for emailing Jeff, I’ll pass. Clearly he’s only interested in lobbing softballs. I know what will happen anyway. I ask him to ask you about the Ric Olie figure for instance. He does and you tell the same story you always do without any proof and he’ll let that stand without follow up.

Now get your ORCON footage from 1996 ready. That sure will prove what a huge success you are. Now run along and make another promise so you can miss that deadline too and then pretend it never happened.

    • http://nilskidoo.blogspot.com/ Richard Caldwell

Dood. Stop. You’re going to make him cry.

  • Matthew Hawes

You’re right Richard, I should stop. He’s got enough to cry about that he doesn’t need me pointing out his flaws.

Besides it looks like he’s run back to one of his blogs so he can say whatever he wants without having to deal with being refuted here.

    http://sheddinglightonlies.blogspot.com/2012/04/letting-hot-air-out-of-big-huge-balloon.html

BTW, bang on with your comment about the spike in traffic. I suspect that’s the reason for this podcast and any further ones.

    • Rick Olney

Matt, this hasn’t been a pissing contest. Did you think it was? I’m merely conversing with people that appear to have a need to push their specific sort of agenda here. I’d never heard or met Richard (nilskidoo)before. Amazing how people read things on the Internet, not knowing the details or what is behind the motives and take what they read to be total truth.

Where the Ric Olie action figure is concerned though, I’ve told about how that all happened before. I really don’t care who believes whether it happened that way or not. It was meant to be a personal expression between others at Lucas Ent. and myself, and not for the likes of haters. Again, you come off like you’re jealous.

Far as my blogs are concerned, if they attract you then that basically means you’re either a fan or a stalker. Heh, heh… because only two types of people read them.

And Sara, if I attacked you online for 6-7 years saying all sorts of untrue things about you — You’d be defensive also. But think whatever…

      • http://nilskidoo.blogspot.com/ Richard Caldwell

Olney, with nothing but a thousand and one broken promises and false claims from you, and events that were entirely cancelled and dropped for a track record (criminal allegations or no criminal allegations), the ONLY way anybody can know anything about you is through the internet. You have no tangible, visceral evidence of anything favorable, of any accomplishments or of any deal followed through with.
I am a journalist who cares deeply for the strength and longevity of the comic book medium, and am greatly concerned with creator rights. I am involving myself in this now because I am sick and tired of reading about you and your delirious spins. You need to be shut down permanently, before you do anymore harm to anymore people. Pay your damn bills and disappear already.

        • Rick Olney

          Mr. Caldwell,
I don’t know you. Your remarks interested me though after reading that you felt that I should be “shut down permanently” and then followed with the remark about disappearing. I have made a formal report of your threat. I also made sure that your blog post was seen. You may possibly called upon to explain what you meant by me doing anymore harm to others. Certainly you’re caught up in the drama of it, but due to the very real threats I’ve had to contend with these last 7 years, your words just as credible on that level.

  • Sara

One question: why would someone who claims to be a stand-up guy and who has “never lied or misrepresented” himself feel the need to write long, rambling responses to everyone who posts about him?

Methinks he doth protest too much.

  • Albert

I have known Rick Olney for quite a few years. I’ve never met him in person but was an active member of Orca. He has never been anything but nice and respectful to me. While a member of Orca over the years I have received hundreds of dollars worth of free comics and collectables. And while I don’t know the actual enrollment numbers at its peak years ago I do know it was a large vibrant community that I had a lot of interaction with.
I have questioned Rick personally, via Email, over the years about his multiple issues with “bad press”. He has always had a reasonable, rational explanation as to what actually transpired. Many blogs and websites hear that his name is involved and they immediately blame him and go on a witch hunt under the banner of , “what did he do now.” Never is his side of things accurately depicted. He has far more supporters in the comics industry (despite the accusations) than most of you still realize.
This community has no reason to hate and flame him any more than you do me (although I suppose you will just because I am arguing in favor of a man I have never met). The guy has been beat up constantly for years in various blogs. Can’t anyone seem to forget the past, move on, and give the guy a chance?
I’m really so surprised that this group of “adults” is so offended by one person that they would stoop to all this childishness. All the accusations are baseless hearsay unless someone can provide real tangible proof. Anyone have an invoice, or just another quote from someone elses blog? i don’t claim to be an expert on Rick or his business (as you guys seem to) I only know what I’ve witnessed. He has been kind and giving. Never asking me for anything.
Just shut-up and listen to the podcast; or don’t. I really don’t care. I know this is one community I would never involve myself with beyond defending the barrage of incoming flames.

    • http://simonkirbyjr.blogspot.com Simon Kirby Jr.

“All the accusations are baseless hearsay unless someone can provide real tangible proof. Anyone have an invoice, or just another quote from someone elses blog?”

      Did you miss these posts?

      http://iblogalot.com/2011/12/01/rick-olney-vs-scott-reed/

Yes, it’s from someone’s blog, but look at the links provided, showing Rick Olney’s own words, plus the picture of the court-ordered judgment. What was his “reasonable, rational explanation” for why, despite claiming to have a lawyer that he was going to use to sue multiple people, that he never showed up to challenge that case? Why did he continuously claim he was going file a lawsuit to overturn that case, and then never did? Why did he publicly declare on Bleedingcool that he was going to pay off the debt and then after one (late) payment of $100 he never made any further payments and then flat-out stated that he never really intended to pay it off, and brags that he never will pay it off?

And then click to following post, there’s another image of a 2nd court-ordered judgment against him, from James Tournas, for the same exact reason of lack of payment? There’s your tangible proof. Those judgments are real, they exist. He legally owes both of those men money. He can claim all he wants that Scott Reed and James Tournas are wrong, which is easy to say online, but when it comes time to present their side in a court of law, where it really counts, Rick Olney is the one who doesn’t show up. And unless he pays those two judgments in full, or declares bankruptcy, then it is not hearsay, it is a FACT to state that he owes people money for work that they did for him.

And then go to the next blog about Val Staples. That never went to court, but you can see the links to where Rick Olney admitted to owing money to Val. And that still hasn’t been paid. And notice how Val’s story is exactly the same as Scott Reed and James Tournas’ stories? Rick Olney hired them, they turned in the work, and then months passed without Rick Olney paying them, until they finally went public with their side, and then Rick responded by threatening THEM with lawsuits, for daring to tell people that he didn’t pay them. You really think that it’s more logical to believe that all 3 of those men are lying, and that Rick Olney is the innocent party here?

And that’s followed by a post about Matt Busch. Rick Olney can argue all he wants about how Matt Busch gave him the maps, to sell for charity at the Adirondack ComicFest, so they’re not stolen, but why hasn’t he just returned them? The time that the ACF was supposed to occur has long since past and, again, check the links, read where Rick Olney said multiple times that he was simply sticking by that original agreement, and would willingly return the maps after Nov. 15 of last year. And then he just changed his mind and decided that he won’t return them unless Matt Busch posts an apology (apology for what? For telling people the truth, that Rick was refusing to return the maps?) on his website for a week. This could have been over months ago, with lots of money given to a Veterans charity already, yet it hasn’t happened all because of Rick Olney. That seems reasonable and rational to you? Really?!?

Again, you can call it hearsay, but think logically. Literally over a dozen people have come forward with similar stories about Rick Olney, but you’re convinced that they’re ALL lying, and that Rick is the one who is just misunderstood? And you’re basing this on the fact that he’s given you a bunch of comic-books over the years?

“Can’t anyone seem to forget the past, move on, and give the guy a chance?”

Yes, once he’s paid off those people that currently (not in the past) owes money to. But why should anyone give him a chance before that?

      • Rick Olney

Simon Kirby, Jr. is a troll, a juvenile adult hiding behind a phony made-up screen name specifically to post lies and taffy stretched half truths..like many of the ‘people’ that have had their fun at my expense over the 7 years online.

But in reading his BS ‘pitch’ I wanted to reply specifically to it because its a poignant and important part of where this all started.

        He said:
“And then go to the next blog about Val Staples. That never went to court, but you can see the links to where Rick Olney admitted to owing money to Val. And that still hasn’t been paid.”

No, he hasn’t. But I don’t control that. Val Staples was a story TEAM member with (at least one or two) other people. As such, where being paid for HIS work on that story … ALL HIS STORY TEAM PARTNERS have to agree to work with me to be paid and resolve their issue regarding non-payment.

        And WHY is that important?

Well, if I pay STAPLES and his other team creators have no desire (after all the hoopla that has been made of the matter) to work with me then paying ONE story team member, say the Colorist, simply means I’m paying for nothing — NO WORK RECEIVED. So STAPLES can say and think what he like, but unless EVERYONE is on the same page and willing to complete and fulfill their legal contractual obligation … NOTHING … moves forward. THAT isn’t my fault. I have been willing to work out payment arrangement to all involved. It IS ALL OF THEM that are fractured and not working together.

Now, a part of that is the fault of Dave Lanphear, the creative director of TightLip Entertainment at that point in time. Another person that worked harder to make this a clusterfeck over a resolved issue was Chuck Dixon.

I released Lanphear from employment specifically because it was HIS responsibility (via his work-for-hire job description with my company) to insure and obtain ALL pertinent documents regarding the TALES OF THE SPOOKY book series. He failed. In fact, he was complacent and complicit. Chuck Dixon is down on record for claiming that he never signed a non-disclosure agreement. Dixon signed on with Lanphear and brought 3 or 4 of his stories to the book initially. Needless to say, if Dixon did not sign a non-disclosure agreement (which was a legal document), he didn’t also sign his work-for-hire contract.

Do you really think that someone like Chuck Dixon was that inept? And what about Lanphear? When questioned on this by me, he swore up and down that Dixon agreed to take the TOTS project on.

Is it a coincidence that the early harassment and assault against me came from one of Dixon’s friends (Gail Simone) and the female, another creative writer managing his personal website forum?

I’ve never thought so. Legally, for me to pursue Dixon or Staples on reneging on their contract, I’d have to include all their creative team members, who seemingly took instruction from sources (Dixon? Lanphear?) instead of using common sense to do their part in solving the problem.

And why was Dixon upset to begin with?

Well, my mom died and after being asked for a two week extension on his payment schedule Dixon declined and decided to play games.

All that I share here is documented. I wasn’t about to wage some long drawn out legal battle over the likes of Dixon. LEGALLY, I’m on the right side of the Law.

Besides which — Have you EVER read anything from Dixon or Lanphear regarding this all? Or have they basically sat back and watched the show as their pals and dweebie troll fans ‘handled’ it?

I know the answer. Sad that you don’t.

        • http://www.scribblerworks.us/blog/ Sarah Beach

You have a logical fallacy in your statement, Rick. You declare that because Chuck Dixon did not sign the Non Disclosure Agreement (your version of which even Chuck’s lawyer laughed at), that he did not sign his work contract with you. Excuse me? Chuck Dixon is a professional and knows the difference between a useless NDA and a contract. You are the one who has provided no proof of that – but then you frequently claim your records are incomplete or a mess or alternately, that you indeed HAVE specific documents. In fact, you have at times claimed that you did indeed have a signed NDA from Dixon. You are not consistent in your declarations.

          • Rick Olney

            Sarah Beach:

Well, you, Dixon’s lawyer, and Dixon can chuckle all you like collectively. If it is is Dixon’s assertion that he signed no confidentiality or work-for-hire contract through his interaction with Dave Lanphear. Then because of such, no signed agreements means no work-for-hire existed. And if Dixon (through your harassment and libeling) was meant to derail TALES OF THE SPOOKY then all that transpired was the alienation and prevention of the other talents not being paid.

I’ve never seen any other such “professional” speak supposedly through the imposing big mouth, as he has seemingly done these last 7 years. Strikes me as the actions of a coward, frankly.

Last I heard from Dave Lanphear, a contract and NDA did exist. Are you implying that Lanphear isn’t a professional? And what role do you play in all this again?

    • Rick Olney

      Hey Albert!

Nice to read your comments here (Quick, duck!!) but don’t blame the entire community. many of these people posting simply came here for attention; trolls and stalkers looking for attention. Anyway, thanks for words of support. You want to blame someone for their lunacy and lack of common sense blame the supposed ‘pros’ that either propagated and perpetuated the lies or fell for everything they read. Even then you can’t blame them. Some people are born that way.

  • Dave Sonnett

Has Matt Busch received the remaining Indiana Jones maps or not? Simple and easy to prove. And has the DAV received (and cancelled) the check Rick sent for the maps he unlawfully sold? Again, easy to prove.

Whoever’s right, the proof is relatively easy to show.

    • Rick Olney

No maps were unlawfully sold. Again, no cease and desist order/request was EVER received by me. Another one of those situations where a talent with fans uses them as a hammer.

And to further correct your post, Dave Sonnett — the DAV was NEVER officially involved in this matter. Busch had mentioned a suggestion to me that I might want to consider contacting the American disabled veterans groups, and a member of the group harassing me from Gail Simone’s website who was affiliated with the actual DAV then involved herself and well, anytime you have people rushing to judgement with nothing but vigilantism in their minds, being propelled to think that they’re on a ‘mission’ facts become moot and you couple that with Mat Busch then being a TARGET by those people … well, Busch did and said what he did and said but it wasn’t truthful.

I’ll be releasing further details on these maps in my possession (given freely to me to sell with profit going to ‘A’ veteran’s group) during the next podcast, I believe.

  • Rick Olney

Looking forward to the next podcast episode. Thanks for your comments, folks!

    Dear Creative Professional,
If you are approached by an individual named Rick Olney or a representative of this man, if you are approached by Olney or anyone else representing entities known as The Mighty Mini-Con, TightLip Entertainment, ORCA, Adirondathon, or Adirondack Comics Fest, we strongly urge you to run in the other direction.
There is a very long, very well-documented history of non-payment, deceit, emotional manipulation, and fraud in connection with this man and his projects. Despite searching and publicly requesting evidence for over three months, nobody has been able to produce any evidence of any artist ever having been paid in full for their work for TightLip. Many attending professionals to his conventions were promised reimbursement of their expenses, but while some were provided with lodging, none are known to have received full compensation for travel and meal costs, and many have been the subject of vicious personal attacks as a result of having inquired about the promised reimbursement. In addition, Mr. Olney has a considerable history of erratic and unprofessional behavior on many message forums and mailing lists on the internet, several of which have banned him due to his frequently racist, sexist, and homophobic rants, as well as his willingness to hurl vicious insults in response to legitimate questions about his business practices.
As far as we can tell, nearly everyone who has ever had any professional contact with TightLip, the Mighty Mini-Con, or Rick Olney, has a “war story” to tell about being misled, cheated, and used.

Do business with Olney at your own risk.
We would prefer to not do this in such a public manner, but, with Olney again advertising a convention and claiming that he is still planning to publish comic books, the greater good demands we speak out.

And Gail Simone has her final advice about Rick Olney too:

How To Spot Rick Olney When He Approaches You

I thought it would be worthwhile to post the exact approach Rick uses to get what he wants without paying. If you somehow manage to disbelieve the dozens of firsthand testimonials of industry people regarding this man,if you choose to ignore their warnings, take a look at this list and see if it matches his behavior with you.

Say you have something of use or value to Rick. It could be comics, it could be talent, it could be anything.
STEP ONE: He flatters you beyond all reason. He proclaims himself to be your biggest fan. And he’s going to beyour benefactor…he’s going to do everything in his power to make you get the recognition, money, orcredentials you want. He finds what you want, and tells you he will supply it. But first, flattery, flattery, flattery. He uses this technique every time, and it is especially effective on people just breaking into the industry, or thosewho are aspiring to do so.

STEP TWO: He tells you a huge sack of nonsense about his credentials, claims so ridiculous (and completely bull*&^%),that they somehow seem credible because no sane person would make them up. He tells you credentials he doesn’thave…he’s friends with Stan Lee, he invented the idea of comics in the classroom, his comic club had 1800 membersand gave away 700000 comics, George Lucas named a character and toy after him in Phantom Menace, the filmIron Man II has a cameo character that is supposed to be him, half a dozen characters in comics are based on himor his club mascot, on and on and on…it’s endless. And most people do not have the resources or inclinationto check these claims. So it SOUNDS like he actually is in the industry in some capacity. He isn’t (and the claimsare all false).
STEP THREE: He promises you extravagant treatment. He will fly you out to his cons, pay for everything, you will be treated like royalty, paid an appearance fee, ride in town cars…or, if he’s trying to get you to workfor free, he will offer you a high page rate and lots of exposure. He has no capacity to do any of these things, ever. But he will promise them.
STEP FOUR: He will lay out a long, long conspiracy theory where a few internet trolls are trying to ruin his good name.He will play the sympathy card here…you will feel sorry for him. Until the moment you read dozens of firsthandaccounts of people who have been told this same line of nonsense. Does it REALLY sound right to you thatdozens of people have come forward, all telling the same story, and none were paid, and yet somehow, the response is all to try to crush some weird little man in upstate New York? Use your reason, read the testimonials. Look past the flattery and the promise of money you will NEVER receive.

STEP FIVE: He will issue you a boilerplate contract that he got off the internet that has nothingto do with the industry and makes little sense in this context. An NDA will be included.

STEP SIX: He will immediately begin breaking promises. Immediately. Pay dates will be missed. Thesewill be blamed on a non-existent bookkeeper. He will have to ‘draw from a special account.’ He willtell you the check is in the mail. We all heard all those excuses. Sometimes he would forget whichexcuse he used last time and try it again weeks later with the same person. You will NOT be paid. His answer will always be for you to keep working. You’ve come this far, right? You are goingto risk everything over a small amount of money? Keep working. He will have endless excuses, which will hinge on your human decency–he will have deaths in the family, illnesses, and othercatastrophic problems. They won’t stop him from having internet tantrums or telling people thecheck is in the mail when it isn’t, all they seem to prevent is him keeping his word.

STEP SEVEN: As it becomes clear that you are not getting paid, and you are yet another of hisvictims, he will start to show his true colors. He will start to threaten you, mildly at first. Threatsto your career, legal threats. At this point, he is trying to bully you into work he hasn’tpaid for. He will use things he learned against you that you told him in confidence.

STEP EIGHT: He will try stretching you along. This happens with everyone he abuses in this manner…he will offer some sort of bonus you didn’t ask for, ‘for the inconvenience.’ Everything fromt-shirts, to bonuses, to merchandise, to comics…he’s going to be a magnanimous guy andeven though you are being SO MEAN by not trusting him, just because he’s broken every promise,he’s going to be the bigger guy and give you this bonus. When he pays you. Which he never will. These bonuses never appear. But he will still tell people he gave them to you. For months,he told people he paid my husband’s airfare to his con, when he hadn’t even fully paid MY airfare. Then one day, he just admitted he hadn’t, and tried out a new lie, that I had demanded he paymy husband’s airfare. Just like that, like a switch was thrown, the old lie was discarded and anew one put in place. It’s weird as hell. Don’t fall for it.

STEP NINE: Here, he will begin inventing hoops for you to jump through, additional steps todo before you will get paid. If you don’t do them, you won’t be paid. If you DO do them, youwon’t be paid, you’ll just get more hoops. New paperwork he needs, he’ll ‘lose your email andcontact info,’ receipts he never asked for will need to be produced, additional fixes to the work,on and on. All delaying tactics. He told his former PR person, in public, that she just neededto sign an NDA to get paid. She said fine, I’ll sign it. He immediately changed his mind, the NDAwas worthless and she wouldn’t be paid. Hoops, hoops, hoops. I don’t know if he just likessticking the knife in, or it’s a delaying tactic. But it makes zero difference, you won’t be paid.

STEP TEN A: At this point you have the choice of either giving up and forgetting about it, in whichcase, you will never be paid, or going public about it, in which case, you will never be paid.If you don’t go public, he will come up with an excuse not to pay you. He won’t answer youremails or phone calls. You won’t be paid.

STEP TEN B: If you DO go public, he will use that as an excuse not to pay you. The NDA, whichoffers NO protection for a deadbeat employer who broke the contract, will be the excuse. But whatif, like, say, Chuck Dixon, you were never given an NDA, you didn’t sign an NDA, and the work wascompleted and accepted? You STILL will NOT be paid.

STEP ELEVEN: Once you are on Olney’s never-ending enemies list, there is no level he won’t stoopto. He will insult, harass, threaten…he will use racist, homophobic and misogynistic language. He willissue physical and legal threats. Just last month he posted a smug mocking taunt to a woman whohad stood up to him, over the DEATH OF HER HUSBAND AND CHILD. This is a man who will tellyou endlessly what an honorable Christian man he is. He delighted in telling an artist who trustedhim that he would never be paid, while that man’s angelic baby daughter was in the hospital nearthe very end of her too-short life. He will try to embarrass and hurt you for daring to speak outabout his non-payment and bad behavior.

And you will never, ever, ever be paid.
If anyone, not just Rick, but ANYONE in the comics industry treats you like this, WALK AWAY.
They are poison. They can’t help your career, and you aren’t doing them any favors. They are notwell-intended goofs.

MOST people in comics are great. I have been fortunate enough to be involved in probably close toa hundred conventions and appearances and haven’t had a single bad experience or dishonestpromoter in the batch, EXCEPT for the Mighty-Mini Con, which I wish to God I had never agreed toattend.

MOST are great. Don’t let one person make you think it’s all bad.

But BE AWARE. The internet allows you to communicate, to make sure a publisher or con organizer is onthe level. Take that ten minutes, be wary of false flattery and promises, and you will saveyourself endless misery later.

    Thanks, and good day!
