Review: The fantasy aspects finally shows up in the webseries in full force and the results….are not very impressive. The budget of the show sadly comes through here as these two episodes are filled with mediocre-to-bad CGI, and SyFy channel original movie looking sets.
These two episodes are just plain bland. The story is told in completely uninspired narration, and frustratingly, done with a lot of “comic” style animation…
These animated sequences pop up so much it comes off as more of a budget conscious decision then as a stylistic choice (unlike the Oren Ishii anime sequence in Kill Bill.) Half the time I’m sitting here watching the animated sequences and thinking “Why wasn’t this live action?” There needed to be a better balance, and reasoning, between the styles.
The acting as also been downgraded since the first two episodes. Since the biggest star of this series, Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan, are no longer here, the acting as been stiff and just downright boring.
The fights (or fight in these two episodes cases) are OK, but again, there is that sense of the whole production giving it their all in the first two action packed episodes. I’m not asking for extreme action like in the first two episodes for EVERY episode, but when your story is lacking, with very little compelling things about it, there needs to be something to compensate for it.
I know I’ve been a bit late with these reviews, but when you get a two parter as underwhelming as this one, it’s pretty hard to muster up the energy to write about it. This origin story of Kitana and Mileena just didn’t feel exciting, epic, or dramatic.
Hopefully the next few episodes picks up the pace.
